Reviews 2 for 2

So far I've been lucky. I've had two wonderful reviews on my book Marshal in Petticoats. You can read them at Coffee Time Reviews and Once Upon A Romance.

I know the day will come when I'll get a not so nice review and when it does, I'll just remember all the people who've read my book and said they laughed, they cried, and they couldn't put it down. Because in the long run, it's your readers who matter and not just reviewers.

Do you read a book because of a review or because someone said it was good? Does a review make or break whether you want to read a book or not?

I read reviews. I'm a voracious reader, and there are simply too many books and too little time. If one of my top ten authors has given a good jacket quote, that tells me that I might like the book. If 15 out of 15 amazon readers hate it, that's a clue too. But, I also look for other signs: Is the reviewer someone with taste like mine? The NY Times book reviewers do not share my personal tastes in either fiction or nonfiction. In fact, a really wretched NYT review has been known to send me scurrying for the library. I love lists. I look at top 10 lists, RITA winners, Writer's Digest lists, etc. I don't have time to read full reviews as often as I would like so I often rely on the little snippets of review posted in an ad or online or in a bookstore. I don't usually buy "naked" books without some sort of endorsement on the cover or front pages unless I know the author or the book is already on my TBR list.

Oh and congrats again on your reviews. Reviews like yours are NOT a dime a dozen---you should be truly proud of such stellar reviews. The reviews make me very eager to get my hands on a copy this weekend!

Thanks Lisa and Wavy! Yeah, I was so worried the reveiws would bash my book and then I'd be crushed, but I've been overwhelmed not only at the reveiws, but the people who have read it and gone on and on about what they liked about it. Then there are those who I think didn't realize there would be love scenes and they haven't said a word. I think, quite frankly, I shocked them! LOL

Congrats again Paty!

I do what Bethany does, I read the jacket reviews by authors I like and read, see what they think and then read the first few pages of the book before I buy. I also go to my favorite author's websites and see what they have on their recommended reads list, then I go check the book out and read at least the first few pages. Also, the gals at my local Waldenbooks are very helpful and have recommended some great reads, but still, I read the first few pages to find out for myself. You can always tell by the first few pages if it's your style or not.

A bad review wouldn't necessarily keep me from reading a book or at least checking it out. I mean, I can't stand Nora Roberts' writing but millions of others do, so if I were to write a review on one of her books it wouldn't be favorable, but that's just my opinion. So, no, I don't care what others say, I check it out for myself. Just like movies. I don't go by reviews for those either. I just play Russian Roulette for those. LOL
