Freebies

As my next book is in the stages of being published, I'm trying to figure out what I can give people who buy my books at book signings. The first two books I gave out handmade book thongs. A Star like a badge on one end and blue beads on the other with a pseudo-leather braided string for Marshal in Petticoats, and a white satin ribbon with an angel on one end and yellow, brown, and gold beads on the other end for Gambling on an Angel.

But I don't want to go with book thongs for "Perfectly Good Nanny". It's a contemporary cowboy story and I want something different. I thought of a 6" ruler with the book cover or just the info on it. (You know for teacher)

What have you as readers and writers seen to promote books that you liked? Or if you were buying a book at a book signing, what would you like to get as a momento?

This is just me, but I love magnets. I never use bookmarks (bad, bad reader) and little postcards just get recycled, but magnets--I still have the magnets from National, and it reminds me to check and see if those authors have anything else out. My other favorites are pencils, pens, and notepads. You can get good deals on pencils very very cheap. Ditto magnets and pads.

Thanks Wavy! I have magnets for the first two books and wanted to do something different. I'm leaning toward pens or pencils.

I prefer pens. They stay around for a long time, and I'm writing when I use them. I never pick up or use pencils (unless they're mechanical pencils). I find them frustrating -- too much drag and too much maintenance required. I ignore magnets as they contribute to clutter on my refrigerator and are useless anywhere else. Good luck at your signings, Paty!

Thanks Barbara! I'm leaning toward pens. Now, I'm waiting to see what the main color is on my book cover so I can color coordinate!

This is a really late comment, but I love magnets. I stick them on my file cabinet next to my desk and see them every day that way. Great reminders for me. I don't use pens or pencils because I'm really picky about the way a pen fits into my hand and the pens that people usually give out for promotion are always cheap pens that suck. LOL I'm not saying anything against pens that you'd pick out, but in order to not break your bank you'll have to be careful on how much you spend on pens, thus they will end up being the ones that don't feel good in one's hand and I personally would toss it rather than use it. So see, it's a hard decision. Some like one thing, others like something else.

How's that for being no help!
