Friday Farm Fun- Hunting that Wascally Snake

The past weekend in Princeton we were sitting on the deck eating dinner. I'd cooked the burgers on the barbecue and had performed the usual ritual of turning off the propane tank. A hissing sound started up. I checked the bbq for a gas leak, but it was all shut off.

Tink jumped up on the deck near the corner. My hubby thought it was a water leak. He got down on his hands and knees to listen and look under the bathroom. While he was intently listening the sound stopped. He stood up and walked on the deck and the sound started again. He stopped, it stopped, he walked, it started up.

He looked down through the deck and saw the rattles of a snake. The chhh sound was it shaking the rattles. Hubby said it didn't look very big. He got the 22 and poked at it's tail through the cracks on the deck, but  couldn't get the snake to turn around so he could shoot it. At this point, I was running around the deck barefoot. He suggested I put on shoes.

Then hubby stopped harassing it and all went quiet. He looked again and the tail was gone. I stomped around inside the cabin to see if we could hear it and discover where it went but there wasn't any more tail shaking going on.

Believing the snake may have left the area from another side if the cabin, my hubby did a slow surveillance check very reminiscent of Elmer Fudd walking soft-footed as he looked for the Wascally Wabbit. After one trip around the cabin and a wider circle, hubby deduced the snake headed for the hill.

I hope that is the last snake we encounter this summer. We think the snake may have been slithering by the deck and Tink scared it under. Once we saw it was a rattle snake, we put both dogs in the cabin so they wouldn't try to catch what we were after.

Scary. Here is a funny story about a snake. Picture my sister sitting on her couch in her bathrobe. She's leaning forward with her elbows on her knees, her chin in her hands, watching TV. She glances down and sees a snake coming from under the couch, between her feet.

People will tell you that in this position, you can't lift your feet off the floor. My sis is living proof that you can.
It was a garter snake and they turned him loose outside.

That's a great snake story, Stephanie! Good thing it was a garter snake.

Another snake story. My daughter and I were walking along the trail I usually walk and we saw a snake. I don't know what kind it was. It was just slithering along the path from one side to the other. Waited for it to pass. Not 2 minutes later ... We saw another one. I felt like I was trapped between two pythons. Lol.
