“Abdou says that a red-headed devil has attacked the house,” muttered Licht, “he tried to keep her out…”
“He certainly did,” said the red-headed devil, standing in the open doorway, “I had to force my way in. Some kind of hospitality you have here.”
Her mouth open with shock, Tiffy stood up without knowing she did so, her eyes riveted to the dirty, wild-haired woman. “Aunt Sandy!”

As her final act on this earth, Lyda Sue Stalnaker plummeted out of a Las Vegas helicopter and landed smack in the middle of the Pirate’s Lagoon in front of the Treasure Island Hotel, disrupting the 8:30 p.m. pirate show.
The video ran as the lead-in for the 11: 00 p.m. news. I caught it on a television in the sports bar. Actually, it was amazing I caught it at all. My name is Lucky O’Toole, and I am the chief problem solver at the Babylon, the newest, most over-the-top mega casino/resort on the Las Vegas Strip. I’d been fighting my way through the crowds packing the casino on my way to Stairwell Fifteen to deal with a naked man asleep under the stairs when I caught the television feed out of the corner of my eye.

Lauren’s eyes widened when she turned toward the open window.

Olivia gave a slight shake of her head. She put the gun to her lips like a deadly finger. The pistol wavered as Olivia moved forward and straightened. She rested the muzzle against the spongy flesh of the driver’s temple.

Dirk was gone for good, thank God. She doubted anyone would ask what became of her husband. The whole town knew his sorry history. The chief of police made sure of that. He’d spread tales about Dirk like honey on a hot biscuit.

The fan was non-descript in every way—average height and build, brown hair, glasses. Harmless looking. Dopey grin on his face, like he’d hit the lottery because he’d actually had the balls to speak to the crush of his daydreams. She knew enough to be firm. Give him a brief little personal moment, a smile and her signature on something, and get back to her life.

Beneath the graceful wings of her brows her eyes narrowed. Apparently saving her from death was not a good enough excuse for undressing her. He had an uneasy feeling his mother might agree.

“That doesn’t explain why you stole my—my—” She seemed intriguingly at a loss for words. “My inheritance!”

His first reaction was relief she was not going to pursue the issue of her dishabille. Next, it occurred to him she was being cagey about the contents of the brass cylinder.

Snippet from Land Sharks – A Swindle in Sumatra

I can only see her from the back, yet it’s funny that the pretty yellow dress doesn’t fit her quite as perfectly as it did yesterday. She gives it a tug to pull it into place. Looks like she put on a few pounds, too, but that’s silly. She couldn’t possibly have done that since yesterday. Uh, oh. The only explanation terrifies me.

Lauren narrowed her eyes and studied Olivia. "You're obsessing about that car. Like those two guys might be out there. If they are, Ethel's in my purse."

"Ethel?"

"My gun."

"Shhh . . . Keep your voice down," Olivia said. "They're probably long gone. They left the bar after you ordered that last round of drinks. And that's not a purse. It's luggage."

Nancy West said,

The beginning:SMART, BUT DEAD

At some point, the same thought hits everybody over thirty: I might actually get old. Since I was pushing forty, single, and attracted to a reluctant San Antonio detective, that nasty thought frequently wormed its way to the front of my brain. I wrote the column, “Stay Young with Aggie,” answering readers’ questions about how to stay youthful. For me, it was the ideal job, since my greatest fear was catapulting headlong into middle-age decrepitude. So I made a decision: 1997 was the year I’d learn to avoid aging.

Piper saw Sheriff Carlyle lift his phone to his ear. The crowd remained silent, watching as the sheriff’s face turned grim. He said a few words then pocketed the phone and rapidly made his way out of the shop without comment. All eyes followed as he jumped into his parked car, then sped off, his lights flashing.
“Oh, dear,” Aunt Judy quietly voiced what everyone was likely thinking. “Something must be very wrong.”

Olivia narrowed her eyes. She and Woody had only completed the "get dressed and go" part of the exit plan.

Rig's belly jiggled. "With those gray roots and smudgy peepers, she looks like a mean 'ole skunk that got her sniffer caught in the zipper." He elbowed Checkers and laughed again, only louder. He transitioned into a coughing fit. "Don't get her riled up."

"Woody...our dispute was about Mom's book. It's irrelevant now and-"

He held up his hands. "Just a salad. And I could sure use a scotch."

"I can't."

Woody's face slackened. In that instant Olivia recognized the power of her words, two murderous written words on a ruled-paper note that Della had described.

"Yes, Liv, you can."
