Monday Mysteries - Why do you read the mysteries you do?

Like all readers of mystery once I find an author and protagonist I enjoy reading, I tend to go through the authors list of books. Agatha Christie, Sue Grafton, Dorothy Gilmore, Dick Francis, Lillian Braun, Janet Evanovich, and now I've started reading new mystery writers- Christy Evans, Terry O'Dell, Elizabeth Dearl, and Jessie Crockett.

What draws me to these authors are the characters. I love a good twisty plot but give me charters I can relate to and I'll read every book the author puts out. I wish I had more time to read because I've increased my TBR(to be read) pile by three fold with my new Kindle.

I like the heroine who can deal with what life throws at her but at the same time can lean on someone now and then for support.

What are some of your favorite Mystery authors? Why?

Hi, Paty: you have mentioned many of my favorites and I really miss Dick Francis. Elizabeth George is very good and love her hero. P. D. James. Tess Gerritsen. Linda Howard.

Paty, if you like "heroine who can deal with what life throws at her but at the same time can lean on someone now and then for support" I think you'll like Kate Garrett in my upcoming mystery Deadly Legacy - coming out in April. That's exactly how I would describe her. It's also what I look for in books I read.

I love Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum and Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone. I also love the strong, practical men with a good sense of humour - like Nero Wolf's legman, Archie Goodwin. But my favorite cop is Terry Pratchett's His Grace Commander Sir Samuel Vimes, Duke of Ankh-Morpork, from the Discworld series.

Vicki,
Those are good mystery authors.

Alison,
Remind me about your book when it comes out. I agree, all heroes need a sense of humor.

My favorites writers, who are more suspense, I guess, than mystery are Greg Iles and Jeffery Deaver. Deaver is a master at plotting. You never ever know what is going to happen in his books and that is what I love about him.

I like Grafton, Evanovich, and Francis. Found a three-books-in-one by Francis at a thrift store on Saturday. Score!
