What I Love About Romantic Suspense
by D'Ann Lindun
I love everything about
Romantic Suspense, but these reasons stand out for me:
Hot guys. Yeah, I know…all romance has
sexy men. But romantic suspense seems to have more than its share. Think about
it. Danger. Mystery. Drama. Those elements bring to mind military men,
especially special ops type. What’s hotter than a guy in (or out of)
uniform? Built to serve and
protect? Policemen and firemen. Dreamy,
those guys. And what about the other defender heroes who often show up in
suspense—sheiks and cowboys? Oh, my. A
man on a horse in any form is pure perfection. And if you’re into the suit
type, you can find FBI agents, lawyers, and of course, doctors. A man in
protective mode is just hot, hot, hot.
Women in danger. There’s something
about a woman in peril that makes for a good read. I don’t like hide behind a
man types; I’m into women who can stand on their own, but the jeopardy element
brings a built-in tingle. Even if the hero and heroine don’t like each other at
first, they are often drawn or pushed together by an outside threat. Scary
things, whether it be human, beast or element, thrusts a man and woman together
like nothing else. My day-to-day life is pretty dull. I don’t get in car
chases, gunfights or go on the run and hide out with a yummy hero.
There’s more—the setting, often in
remote or exotic locales, is intoxicating. The pace. Romantic suspense often
has quick speed, which makes for a fast read. I get to experience all of the
above—hot men, women in peril in places and situations I would never be. And
did I mention the guaranteed happily ever after?
Romantic suspense gives me all that,
and a whole lot more.
I am offering a special…anyone
who reviews my book Desert Heat on a reputable site between March 22-April 15,
and lets me know, I will send them a copy of any of my other books.
Blurb for Cooper's Redemption
Elizabeth Adams is a
Los Angles native who has always dreamed of living in the Rocky Mountains. She
loves western movies and riding horses, and dreams of being a heroine in a
western film. She gets her chance for real life adventure when her mother
disappears from Salt Lick, Colorado, after going there to sell a ranch she
inherited.
J.B. Cooper (just
Cooper) is under suspicion for killing his neighbor, Henry Harper, over a water
dispute. There is no evidence to convict him, but the shadow of doubt hovers
around him. He just wants to be left in peace.
Circumstances throw
Elizabeth and Cooper together when he tracks rustled cattle to her ranch … and
discovers a body in the barn. Once again, he is the suspect in a suspicious
death. Elizabeth is convinced Cooper had nothing to do with the murder of her
cousin because to her, he’s a true western hero. Together, they search for her
mother, clear Cooper’s name and fall in love along the way.
Excerpt for Cooper's Redemption
The
afternoon flew by into evening as Elizabeth busied herself studying maps of the
area. Her afternoon with Cooper had shown her how big of an area in which she
had to search, and despair filled her heart. The job was too big. Elizabeth
shivered. The fire had died down, and she got up to go add a log to it.
Maybe
a window or door was open. She knew the front door had been locked when she
came in. Maybe the back door was cracked.
It,
too, was firmly shut. Puzzled, she checked each downstairs window. All were
snugly closed. As she went upstairs, toward the room she slept in, the air grew
colder. Slowly, she entered the bedroom. Every window pane had been fully
raised. Cold air blew and flakes of snow covered the bed, the floor. Her own,
peach-colored spread was covered by a solid inch of ice. A chill skittered down
her spine, every pore seemed to constrict. Her feet felt leaden, then liquid.
Her vision blurred.
Was
there a stranger, a killer here? Hiding
in a closet? Lurking? Waiting to do the same to her as he’d done to
Lyle Pritchett?
With
a muffled curse, Elizabeth slammed the windows shut and ran to the phone. With
shaking fingers she dialed the sheriff’s office. “This is Elizabeth Adams . . .
there’s been an intruder in my house. Someone’s been here.” She could scarcely get the words out, her
tongue felt too big for her mouth. Stifling a sob, she managed, “Hurry. Please.
Oh, please.”
“Is someone still there?” the deputy asked as
calmly as if he were making a grocery list.
“I don’t know. I don’t think so.”
“Try to stay calm, Ma’am. Someone will be
right there.”
“Okay,” Elizabeth said on a shaky breath. It
took her two tries to get the phone back on the receiver. Then, without
thinking, she fled to the only person she could think of who would help.
Falling in love with romance novels
the summer before sixth grade, D’Ann Lindun never thought about writing one
until many years later when she took a how-to class at her local college. She
was hooked! She began writing and never looked back. Romance appeals to her
because there's just something so satisfying about writing a book guaranteed to
have a happy ending. D’Ann’s particular favorites usually feature cowboys and
the women who love them. This is probably because she draws inspiration from
the area where she lives, Western Colorado, her husband of twenty-nine years
and their daughter. Composites of their small farm, herd of horses, five
Australian shepherds, a Queensland heeler, nine ducks and cats of every shape
and color often show up in her stories!

All good things to like!
I couldn't have said it better myself, D'Ann. I do love me a good RS story.
Wonderful post. I love protective heros and smart heroines. Great excerpt. I tweeted.
a-ha! Great reasons, D'Ann, I agree...must write a RS now methinks. (if it were that easy LOL).
RS rocks!! I love reading and writing it! I can't wait to read this book, D'Ann! And thanks for the awesome deal!!
I love a good romance. If it has some suspense, all the better. Best wishes on your book!
I love romantic suspense. I paid homage to the genre in DEATH LEGACY and was pleased to get excellent reviews from PUBLISHERS WEEKLY and BOOKLIST. I think as a genre it's not easy for writers because you need to set that perfect balance: 60 % romance and 40% mystery/suspense.
You nailed it for sure. Those are all things to like about romantic suspense :) I enjoy the men in suits as well as those in cowboy boots....if they are Hot, Hot, Hot, I'm in! lol
Another wonderful book. I love those guys who are protective and the women who they are willing to put their lives on the line for!
Your reasons for loving romantic suspense mirror mine, D'Ann. I love the added danger element, two people working their way through emotional issues with danger close on their heels...it's such a thrilling ride!
Romantic Suspense isn't my first love, but I do like it and read it. Your books are always fast paced, well plotted and filled with those hot men you like so much. LOL Desert Heat sounds like great read.
All excellent reasons D'Ann. Especially the hot hot guys. Like FBI agents, spies, and U.S. Marshals. My favorites. Sounds like a great read. Good luck!
Lovely post, D'Ann. Best wishes. :)
