Welcome to the Cowboys and Lawmen Blog Hop!
Join nearly 50 authors as we share why we love Cowboys and Lawmen. What is it that makes small town sheriffs, Texas Rangers, and ex-outlaws-turned-lawmen so irresistible? Whether you write or love to read about the Wild West or modern day cowboys, what do you love most about lawmen who are also cowboys? And what makes them so gosh-darn sexy?
Grand Prize: At least a $100 Gift Card for Amazon or Barnes and Noble, your choice. The winner will be chosen at random from comments containing email addresses, and will be announced on May 7. This is open to both US and international readers.
When I think of the western movies and TV shows I've watched and the western fiction books I've read; the lawmen always tend to be larger than life with past history that made them the lawman they are. It could have been someone in their life was killed or they started on the wrong side of the law and had a change of heart or conscience. Whatever the catalyst that made them become a lawman, they exude a personality that gets the answers they need either by charm or sheer stubbornness. They are proud and help the downtrodden, especially women and children.
It they are tall, muscular, and have a twinkle in their eye, all the better for a swoon-worthy lawman. There are a couple of actors who always play the good guy whether or not they are lawmen. Those are Sam Elliott and Tom Selleck. They are a couple of smooth-talking (love their deep voices), eye-twinkling, man candy cowboys. They always help those in need and take out the bad guys with swift vengeance. But they also know how to treat a lady.
If a fictional western lawman has the grit to take on a town or a gang of outlaws and in the next scene pet a puppy and dry a child's tears, our hearts go out to them and we can overlook the ornery, cussedness they may have displayed earlier. And that's the contradictory nature of a good lawman character in a western romance.
My newest release, Western Duets- Volume One a novella with two short historical westerns has a short story with a U.S. Marshal who shows this contradictory side.

the prize is up to $100 now.
A cowboy...hmmm I love watching the old shows like Bonanza and Big Valley. I had a huge crush on Heath. What a guy! Didn't have to be a lawman but was still so dreamy!
daringzoey@yahoo.com
I loved The Virginian and Lucas McCain on The Rifleman.
oncerfan@yahoo.com
Caroline, I guess I need to update this blog then.
Hi Melissa. I had a thang for Heath too!
Hi oncerfan. I liked Trampus on the Virginian but wasn't much of a fan of The Rifleman. It was, however, my husband's favorite western.
I love Selleck and Shepherd too. They make great cowboys and oh those voices!
Kate, you need to leave your email so you can be in the drawing.
Don't have a favorite one

Let's see. My favorite fictional lawmen were James Arness in Gunsmoke, Gene Barry in Bat Masterson, John Russell in Lawman, Chuck Norris in Texas Ranger, Chuck Connors in Rifleman, Neville Brand in Laredo, and Dennis Weaver in McCloud. I loved all the old westerns and revisit them now via Netflix. :-) Oh and I can't forget Randolph Scott in his movies---I grew up with him! jdh2690@gmail.com
bn, that's okay, maybe after the hop you will. ;)
Stephanie, we have so much in common. ;)
Hey Charlene. I agree.
Angela, Thanks! It was one of my rare smart ideas. ;) Glad to hear you cowboy list is growing.
Hi Janice, Wow, you have some I'd forgotten about. Great list!

Thanks Tamara! McClintock is a good one!
Hi Cindy. Thanks!
I'm afraid to delete the double and triple posts for fear they will all go away and you won't get in the drawing. So please excuse the multiple comments and I'm not sure why they are happening.
HI Jean! Matt Dillon is a good one!
Hi Patty,
Great blog!
Sam has the best voice and love when he plays a lawman!
I loved The Sacketts. Wow, talk about testosterone! Best of luck with Western Duets!
Oooooh yes! Sam Elliot & Tom Selleck--two of my faves! Cowboys of yore had a code of honor, and I think many still do today. My grandparents and my dad were of that ilk and I respect them so much.
Love the cover for Western Duets!
Beautiful Cover!! Congrats!
I love Sam Elliot. Doesn't he have the best speaking voice ever? lol

Gotta agree with those who said Sam Elliott and Tom Selleck, but I had forgotten those older Western TV shows. Hmm...may have to go surfing the Internet to watch those. And how about the Wild, Wild West? A precursor to Western Steampunk perhaps?
Fun blog hop! (And if you need my e-mail address, it's genene (at) genenevalleau (dot) com
There's something about a cowboy, with his tall hat, jeans and boots, that's very sexy! I like the modern day ones the best, since I've been reading contemporary romances lately.

Hi Donna! Thanks for joining the fun!
LOL Jacquie! The Sacketts is one of my faves as you can see by the photos. Thanks!
Heidi, it's that code of honor that makes writing westerns so much fun.
Hi Karen, Thanks!
Hi Genene. Yes, Wild Wild West was one of the first steampunk medias. Thanks for stopping in!
HI Morgan. I agree, the hat, boots, jeans it all makes a man appealing. I've written two contemporary westerns. And I can say I like a cowboy from history or now. LOL
I love reading cowboy lawmen as well as just cowboys. Wishing you continued good luck, Pay.
I had a lot of cowboys that I loved but not a favorite lawman. One of my favorite cowboys was Little Joe.

The only fictional lawman I can think of is John Russell in Lawman. That was a great show. Such a dedicated good man.
Kit3247(at)aol(dot)com
Caroline, Thanks!
Sherry, Little Joe Cartwright was a charming cowboy!
Ingeborg, I don't remember that one. but he sounds like a great model for a lawman. Thanks for stopping in!
As a lawman - Randolph Scott had it made for his time. Chuck Norris managed to pull it off a while back.

CBarton. Two more good picks! Thank you for joining the hop!
I love both those actors! There so good! I have a favorite cowboy series be an author. I love it! Diana Palmer writes a great Long Tall Texan series. Love of great cowboys and lawmen! Thank for sharing and being apart of this awesome hop!

Shadow, I agree. Diana Palmer has some excellent westerns! Thanks for stopping in!
Hi Emmly Jane, Thank you! My daughter is my cover artist.
Oh, Sam Elliott! He's *exactly* how I picture most Western heroes - gruff, plain spoken...and the hawtness doesn't hurt, either. :) Great post, Paty! Love the premise of your book - good luck with it!
kristi_writes_romance@yahoo.com
Hi Kristina! Yes, Sam is definitely a keeper for a western character. Thanks! I'm having fun with the duets.
My favorite fictional lawman was Marshall Dillon of Gunsmoke...he wasn't the "prettiest" marshall but he got the job done.
JFWisherd(at)aol(dot)com
I don't really have a favorite lawman...there were so many in films and tv over the years...it's hard to choose one. Your are right in that Sam and Tom make good cowboys.
