“Once you’ve settled in,” said my hostess, “have a walk around the grounds. You might even see our resident ghost in the Monk’s Grove.”
It took an effort not to roll my eyes. I didn’t believe in ghosts. If it was possible for the dead to communicate with the living, I was damn sure my best friend, Clover, would’ve found a way.

Something from the man’s hand fell onto the tile floor with a “clink.” He tumbled forward. I dropped my cane and caught him. I staggered; his weight pushed me back against the wall. I couldn’t hold his hefty frame and I slid down the wall, still holding the man. I landed on my butt. That’s when I noticed the knife stuck in his back.
A flash of Naomi crossing the street caused her to drop her gaze. She couldn’t implicate her friend without questioning her first. “I didn’t see anything out of the ordinary.”
Detective Greer took a step closer to her. She’d have to tilt her head back to look him in the eye.

Nate Cole heard endless stories about her over the past year from nearly everyone in Conspiracy. And now, C.J. Pulaski had returned home with a slew of damning headlines nipping at her heels.
Some took pleasure in another’s downfall, but not Nate. He’d been under public scrutiny enough times to realize there was more to the story than what was touted in the headlines.

“Emergency! Call me.”
The text roused me from the lonely silence of compiling my research. Dad never texted. And what kind of an emergency would you text about? The muscles tensed in my neck. His small Idaho town was a lot less prone to crisis than the potential international incidents of my brother Cole’s CIA missions, or my Fructose-health Study at CBK Corp.

An incensed shout erupted from the back of the courtroom, followed by a booming male voice. “You’ll pay for this!”
“I warned you all,” shouted Judge Scott over the uproar, scanning the courtroom. “Who said that?”
Xandy’s body continued to shake; her stomach churned. Her legs gave way. She collapsed back in her seat and stared stupefied at her hands.
The hands capable of murder.

He was accustomed to rabid Taliban fundamentalists, Koran-spouting Al Qaeda fighters, thuggish poppy-growers and murderous drug smugglers but not to the fury of a menobleeped American female in the clutches of the worst mood swing in the history of the post-HRT era.
“Ralph better be all right,” I threatened.
Gullamdullah reached out and grabbed for my iPhone with his huge paw but I stepped back, danced out of his reach and hid the object of his desire deep in the folds of my burqa.
With that, Gullamdullah took a step toward me. He didn’t care about Ralph, he didn’t care about me, all he wanted was the goddamn iPhone.
He reached for his AK-47 and pointed it straight at me.

"Rebec—" Too late, Darwin realized her intentions, and for that, she was thankful. Rebecca Lynn leaned in close, angled her head, and covered his mouth with hers. The first touch of their lips sent a wave of sensation careening through her, like a tsunami, and Darwin's muscles tensed bracing for impact. She thought he would push her away. Instead, he captured her in an unbreakable hold and took full possession of their kiss. Darwin took her mouth with a slow, deep hunger. His penetration was deliberate and thorough.

Major H.K.Thornton sat on her haunches and thumbed back her helmet. The crumbling hut had no windows and the stone walls radiated heat like an oven. The stench from animal and human waste so pervasive it crawled over her skin like something alive. Her gaze flicked between the laminated photo taped to her wrist and the face of the girl cowering on the dirt floor.
“I have a visual on the target,” she said into her radio link, “identity confirmed.”

Unshed tears of frustration threatened to spill over.
“These waters have been in the care of my family since my ancestors first stepped on shore at Plymouth. There’s never been anything of this magnitude, anything capable of destroying marine plant and animal life to this degree. Whatever has damaged the flora and fauna hasn’t reached shore, but I’m concerned because it’s just a matter of time till it does. I’ve named the toxin Razor Toxic Bloom-RTB-1, and it is spreading past the outer banks toward Waxing.”
The air was rich with the earthy scent of fall. Leaves littered the ground, grasses swayed golden, and all but the pines stood naked in the wind. Rough under his hand, the rock held a faint warmth given it by sunshine.
Silence surrounded them, so pure he could hear every breath they took, and he’d hold this moment forever, stored, crystal clear, to take out when he needed to remember the beauty of what he’d had for these few days. Tucked away in his mind, where no one could take it away from him.
When Angie’s fingertips feathered across the back of his hand, he turned it over, linked with her in the simplest of ways, and his heart was full.

At the far end of the street, a man’s tall outline was briefly illuminated by the streetlight, before he melted back into the shadows. Knowing she was right only made her more terrified, and ignoring the pain of her protesting muscles, she pushed herself to race flat out for the last block and a half. She hadn’t heard him since she stopped. Maybe he’d gone away.
And she was home!
She was half way across the road when a car roared around the corner and headed straight for her.

Paige Wilkinson's teen years consisted of smiling and preening before Tinseltown's paparazzi. Famous for being famous, mostly based on a viral sex tape, she made her final and deadly appearance sprawled spread-eagle at 3:40 a.m. on a desolate stretch of Balboa Boulevard. Her Jimmy Choo stilettos lay like spawn in the gutter water while her skintight Vera Wang dress bunched above her curvy thighs, exposing a neon pink thing displaying her initials, P.W. embroidered in black.
"Maddie Divine, what are you doing in this part of the city, especially in the middle of a warm summer night? Don't you know detectives usually work during day watch?"

The men continue talking, the doctor’s tone placating, the Carson guy—my husband—irate, and I hear nothing. I’m looking at my comatose body, the wires and tubes and assisted breathing, and all I see is brain squidge. Oozing, gloopy brain squidge.
My past may be gone forever.
And I haven’t the slightest clue if it was one worth keeping.

Before my gangstah-rap neighbor emptied his AK-47 into his buddy, the most exciting thing to happen in our village was the opening of a new grocery store. The store hired a pianist who played Beatles tunes, no doubt to persuade shoppers to part with their money more easily. My neighbor, rapper King Bling, was helping his fans part with their money too, but the shooting ended all that. Once he made bail, he moved and hasn’t been heard from since.
And so it goes in my little corner of the North Shore, about twenty miles from downtown Chicago.

“You want me to be your mistress?”
The Countess of Dorchester’s sculpted brow rose in an exaggerated show of disbelief. Being the object of someone’s ridicule might be a novel experience for Maximus Meacham, Duke of Stirkton, but it wasn’t one he cared to repeat, even if the woman laughing at his proposal spoke like a queen and looked like a goddess.

Connor remembered when Shawn joined Shadow Unit – the bold, brash, loud American had walked in like he owned the place. Connor had disliked him on sight. Now, four years later, he would lay down his life for Shawn.
“You will never find a bigger concentration of degenerates and criminals,” Shawn proclaimed, waving his hand out in front of him.
Connor huffed out a breath with a grin. “Well if anyone would know, it’d be you, mate. How long were you here on assignment with the Agency?”
A cloud passed over Shawn’s eyes. “Too fucking long.”
Connor tipped his head to the side. “Will it be a problem for you being back here? Any unfinished CIA business?”
Shawn shook his head and took a drag of his cigarette. “Nah,” he replied, blowing out a stream of smoke. ”Anyone who wasn’t dead by the end of that mission is long gone."
Almost too late, Rosa Ruiz saw the angels gathered at the bottom of the stairs. They were weeping in a bright, feathered mass, inconsolable, their burnished locks tumbling forward on the steps.
In other times, Rosa might have thought it strange to see so many together. In other times, she might have stopped to listen to their whisperings, or even worked up the courage to try touching one of them.
The times were different now. For good or ill the world had called out to angels through book, video, and even Twitter. Now they were here. Some days there were so many it was hard to walk around. She shook her head and crossed herself quickly.
It was bad luck to step on an angel.

Excerpt:
We started gingerly down the steps when there was a loud crack and a whistling sound. My country roots hadn’t abandoned me—I knew the sound of a rifle shot, and I knew that a bullet had whizzed by not nearly far enough from my head for comfort. No hesitation. I pushed Huggles off the porch and jumped, landing on top of him with enough force that he protested. But I quickly began to reassure him in soft tones, petting him and urging him to stay still.
He moved his Bible from his lap to the side table and pushed the lever to lower the footrest. It creaked along with his knees. Everything in the house creaked. The furniture, the floor, him. He stretched. Pushed long arms and gnarled hands as high as he could reach.
Dog raised her head and turned eyes filmed by cataracts toward the kitchen.
“You hear something, girl?”

But even as she was opening the safe and retrieving the financial book and flash drive, even as she locked it all back up again, she couldn’t help thinking that just one little peek couldn’t hurt. And who would know? She’d have to be careful not to touch anything, including the doorknob, though.
Before she was out of David’s office, she was already digging in her bag for a handkerchief. After crossing the lobby, she approached the door slowly, as if it might perhaps be wired for explosives.
Okay, you’re just being stupid now. For the love of mud, either go inside and have a look around or go home, but quit waffling.
Using the hanky, she turned the knob and swung the door inward. Then she slipped under the police tape before she changed her mind.

EXCERPT:
CHAPTER 1: Please Read and Follow Directions Carefully....
Any woman can be both the perfect housewife and an accomplished assassin, because both functions require the same qualities: creativity; a never-say-die attitude; and an attention to details, no matter how small…
*****
All I really needed to know about being a freelance assassin I learned before my youngest daughter, Trisha, started kindergarten.
I’ve come to that realization as I lay naked and handcuffed to the bed of my target du jour, a sleazebag by the name of Yuri Petrovich.
Yuri has just downed a couple of Viagra with the last of his Starbucks venti-sized nonfat decaf caramel macchiato. This is to ensure us both that his attempt to mount me will have all the gusto of a broncobuster breaking in the wildest filly in the corral before heading on into the sunset. (In truth, we are in a hillside suite at the Chateau Marmont. But considering Yuri’s attitude toward women, the cowboyspeak sums things up quite nicely.)
Believe it or not, everything is going just as I planned, and right on schedule.

"I saw a UFO once." Gil spoke softly into my ear. "Out in the Nevada desert." His hot breath on my earlobe gave me shivers. But I couldn't move away. "I suppose it was probably a top secret vehicle test by the Air Force. I watched the news the next morning. Several crew members of United flights, including some pilots, saw a disc at the same level as their plane. Dark gray and well-defined against the clouds, it was like a rotating Frisbee, they claimed, but spinning so slowly that some couldn't be sure it even moved. It had no apparent lights on it, but there was a glow all around. It hovered above the airport for at least three minutes, then shot up out of sight, leaving a strange tunnel through the clouds. Like somebody punched a hole in the sky."
"Quit trying to spook her, Gil," said Buzz quietly at my other elbow.
I stared into the night, waiting for a visitation from the famous Marfa Mystery Lights.

She heard a rustle in the underbrush, but before she could turn, a huge, calloused hand clamped over her mouth as a matching arm caught her about the waist and lifted her high so her kicking feet met only air.
“Hush up, my love,” a familiar voice hissed. She grew still. There were better ways to deal with John Lout than a physical struggle.
When he uncovered her mouth, she’d had a moment to think. “Oh, John, thank heaven it’s you. I was frightened nearly to death.”
