#1 in the CROOKED
E RANCH Series
Candace Marie
Browne has been the head cook-hell, the only cook on the Crooked E ranch for
the past three years. She’s come to care for the owner Mr. Everson like a
second father and the ranch hands like brothers…all except one. Mason Edwards,
foreman on the Crooked E Ranch.
After walking in on her fiancé and her best friend going at it on her new furniture she needed a break from men altogether. So like any mature woman…Candace moved out of her hometown of Helena, Montana and picked up the first waitress job she could find in Butte and didn’t look back. That’s where Hank Everson found her a few months later and offered her the job on the E.
Mason had noticed the beautiful redhead the moment she walked into the dining room at the E. But what really got him? Was when he saw the woman actually cringe at the dinner he had put on the table.
The long shiny auburn tresses, big brown puppy dog eyes, a body that was rounded in all the right areas. Oh yeah! He’d spent a lot of time thinking about his Candy Girl. Plus, the extra corn bread biscuits she snuck him every Friday after their weekly chili dinner didn’t hurt either.
Yep, Mason had discovered Candace was…Sweet as Candy!

READ AN EXCERPT
“Dance
with a lonely cowboy?” Mason offered his
hand to her as he stood.
“I would love to dance with you
Mace.” Candace ignored the racing of her
heart and the quiver in her nerve endings.
Dammit she was done playing the part of shy unnoticed stalker. From now on she decided she would show Mason
her interest in him and it would be up to him whether he returned her
attentions or not. Either way she was in
full huntress mode now and if she was turned down so be it. At least she wouldn’t continue to live
wondering if there could be more between her and Mason. Hell-if he shot her down at least she’d have
an answer and the knowledge to know it was time to move on.
“I don’t know if I told you earlier or not
but you look absolutely beautiful tonight.
Although, I gotta admit the days you make corn bread I’ve never seen a
woman look any better.” He was so
screwed. When a light giggle made his
groin tighten he knew he was definitely in some trouble.
“So…you’re saying when I make you your own
batch of corn bread biscuits you find me attractive because you are getting
what you want? Wow, how very charming of
you, Mason.” She knew that she sounded a
little snippy. Being pressed against the
man’s body a mere inch or two from hers just where she had wanted him for so
long was forcing her to try and regulate her body’s reaction to it and yeah, it
made her a little tense.
“No, that’s not what I’m saying at
all. I’m saying when we all come in for
chili on Friday nights I know when I look at you that you’re going to have your
hair up in that crazy ponytail that sits right on top of your head-“
“Really Mace-“
“Don’t interrupt me woman I’m not done
yet.” With a slight nod of her head
Candace knew he’d continue and she also knew she wanted to hear what he had to
say.
“I also know you’ll be wearing that red
apron…the one that says “Don’t kiss this cook-cuz I’m too hot for you”-the one
with jalapeno peppers all over it.”
Mason’s smile was almost bashful but why?
“But the best thing? The thing I find so beautiful? Is that you have no idea how stunning you are
with flour on the tip of your nose with your freckles still peeking
through. Then, later after everyone
heads to the bunkhouse you sneak me my extra biscuits and you give me this
smile. Goddam, that smile-that smile
shows me that I’ve never seen a more beautiful woman than you.” There was no more denial. No room to deny the signals he was sending
off her way. Candace was at a loss for
words and wasn’t that something? Thankfully
the DJ played another country ballad because at that moment she was incapable
of anything besides the slow sway speed they were at. Mason leaned back just enough to look into
her face. His narrowed eyes showed his
confusion.
“Candy?
Are you going to say anything?”
Even though it took all the nerve she had left Candace looked him in the
face and the blush she wore spoke measures to him.
“Mace…I…I’m a little taken a back right
now. I’m not really sure what to
say.” She may not know what to say but
she knew what to look at. Her eyes had
locked with his and she didn’t have the willpower to break away.
“This would be a good time to break it to
me if you have no interest for the likes of me.
I don’t want you to be uncomfortable but I just couldn’t go on without
letting you know-“ Candace interrupted him…again.
“Letting me know what, Mason?”
Now or never cowboy.
He pulled her body tight against his own
as he slipped his thigh between hers and applied pressure just hard enough that
Mason heard her breath quicken. Exactly
what he wanted from her-acceptance, now if he could get her surrender. No better time than the present he moved her
hands to the back of his neck as he wrapped his arms around her waist and bowed
his head to nuzzle her neck. The slight
gasp she let out encouraged him to continue.
With his lips against her ear he spoke.
“I wanted to let you know…that I intend to
court you my sweet Candy.”
Would it be terribly tacky to get on her
knees and start thanking God above?
“What do you have to say about that Miss
Browne?” She instantly missed the heat
from his breath on her ear and against her neck but was instantly soothed by
the warmth in his blue eyes as he looked at her.
“I say…it took you long enough.” Mason’s loud laughter seemed to echo through
the small…
