Resolve 2013: Volunteering Good for the Soul

Today is the last day of our 23013 Resolve tour. And you get to hear my take on volunteering.

I've always been a volunteering type person. Even in school I volunteered for committees and helped with school functions. I have talents and I can use them when volunteering. When you don't have money to buy gifts, or food, or to donate to causes, you always have yourself to offer.

I was a 4-H leader for twenty-two years, I offered my knowledge of sewing, cooking, crocheting  and cake decorating to the youth. When my children were in grade school, I volunteered in all their classes, was part of the PTA and helped with functions to raise money for sports and music programs.

Now that my kids have moved on and I no longer am affiliated with the programs of their youth, I now give my time to helping writers I've held office in a RWA chapter and helped with events. I judge contests, critique for people, and teach workshops at conferences and meetings. I have also helped with a 4th grade picture book contest put on by the local writers group where I go into the classroom and show them the basics of writing a picture book.

I'm happiest when I can help others and you know that old saying "what goes around comes around" it's true. When you give of yourself you not only feel fulfilled but good things will come to you.

What was the last thing you volunteered for? Did you feel the good karma?

This has been a very fun blog tour. I volunteer for our RWA chapter and critique for our critique service. I've always been a volunteer too and found it very rewarding.

Paty, you are one of the sweetest, kindest people I know. I've learned a lot from your posts during this tour. You definitely are an example of what patience and good karma brings. It's been a blast doing the tour with you.

Since New Year's Resolutions are often self-focused, I've so appreciated the reminder to think of how I can give back to my community in 2013.

Right now, I'm waiting for books to read for a contest I volunteered to judge. Okay, that's a little selfish since I love to read :)

Happy 2013!

I can tell you are a really nice person. I bet your kids really appreciate that you are letting them stay with you for awhile. I hope I get to meet you some day. I read your Mayan book and it was stupendous~I can't wait for the Aztec book.

Sorry I'm late responding. I was helping my daughter paint her house today(and tomorrow, and the next day)

Hi Jamie, Thanks. This tour has been fun and I've met more fun authors. I think everyone has had valid information on volunteering, too.

Hey Maggie, thank you for your kind words. I've enjoyed this tour as well.

Hi Jessa! LOL, I'm waiting for books to read for a contest too! Could it be the same? There are some volunteer things that aren't a hardship. ;0)

Hi Evelyn, I'm glad you enjoyed Secrets of a Mayan Moon. I hope we meet some day also.
