"Olivia Novak," Woody whispered. "Who the hell are you?" He wrapped the crystal apple in the towel to quell the blaze. This memento he'd take home - and one other for a different reason. He didn't want anyone's hands on it but his.

Stepping to the kitchen windowsill, Woody seized the cloudy Lydia Pinkham's Elixir bottle - without a rinse - and slipped it into his jacket pocket, already heavy with a story. The inciting incident, the motive, and the evidence were now united.

The rock crashed through the window, barely missing Rory Anderson's head, and slammed into the bookcase behind her. Seconds later, she heard the revving of an engine followed by the squeal of tires as a car sped away.

Rory's heart leapt into her throat. She gaped at the jagged hole in the window in front of her desk and swiveled her chair around to look behind her, where a dozen paperbacks had tumbled out of the bookcase onto the hardwood floor. Nestled among them lay the fist-sized rock that had come close to knocking her out.

Holding his gaze, I sheathed my knife, dug into another pouch, and threw a capped vial into the darkness between myself and potential capture. The glass broke, and when the chemicals inside hit the air, a dense smoke obscured all vision. But I had already calculated the distance to the nearest window, moved to it, and affixed a suction cup with a braided nylon line to the wall. The painting protected in one hand, my remaining gloved fist, now fitted with brass knuckles, shattered the narrow pane. I slid through the turret’s slit window, taking a few shards of glass along for the ride, and rappelled down the rough stone wall to the manicured lawn.

If I had known that was the last day I’d see my mama alive, I would have begged that big ole gator to swallow me whole.
Snap. No more Hope.
Instead I find myself standing in the middle of the kitchen, bags of groceries in my arms, staring out at the ocean. I was right. Someone was following me. I thought I’d been so careful. Gotten away with the things I’d done. A man stands in front of me, gun leveled at my black heart.
“Bad little girls always get what they deserve.”
Sooner or later everyone pays. I close my eyes and wait.

“I’m going to call Guinness World Records,”Uncle Bob said. “See if they have a category for ‘latest person in the world,’ or maybe ‘the only person in the world who can get up at four in the morning and still be late for work.’”
Then he looked up from the computer and saw my face. “Oh shit,” he said, standing up. “Did you burn down something else?”

"You sure you got nothing to tell me?" Detective Belkins tapped me hard on the chest. I would have a bruise there. I ignored it.

"Yes, sir."

He smiled. A thin, mean smirk. "Jesse Damon, you're under arrest for the murder of Mitchell Robinson."

It never failed. On a holiday or a scheduled day off, or right in the middle of a great night’s sleep, the phone rang, like it just did.

Without opening his eyes, Detective Doug Milligan reached for his phone and answered. “Milligan.”

“You’re needed at the old pier.” The voice belonged to Sergeant Abel Navarro. “Homicide. Zachary will meet you there.”

“My father didn’t kill himself.” The kid’s voice crackled with pubescent hormones. But other than the wavering voice, he had an unflinching determination. It was the third time he’d made the statement since showing up at my sister’s house this morning.

The kid was twelve, and staring at me through a clump of blond hair that fell over his right eye. He was in dire need of a haircut. But I’m not the fashion police so it didn’t matter to me if he got one or not.

“Look . . . Tatum, sometimes we don’t always understand why people do the things they do.” My own voice was scratchy from morning grogginess.

“He didn’t kill himself.” That was number four. Not that I was counting.

His eyes bulged as I lifted my hand from the coins. For the first time I realized just how dangerous Mike’s actions had been. If the gold affected my boss this way, what would it do to disgruntled partners?

“You sound as if you do not believe in the curse,” I said, curious in spite of myself.
He shrugged, and I noticed again the breadth of his shoulders; I had remembered him as a spindly youth, but perhaps my memory of him had been colored by dislike, either mine or Richard’s. Or perhaps he had a tailor as clever as his cobbler. “My belief in it is immaterial,” he said. “It’s the fact that all of the marriageable ladies in my circle believe in it that presents the difficulty. And hence I come to you.”

She was young, somewhere between twenty-five and thirty. She was pretty, with chestnut hair and brown eyes, about five feet, six inches tall and weighing 125 pounds. And she was dead. Her body was cast off like some forgotten rag doll in a clump of weeds along State Street, not far from well-traveled River Road in East Liverpool, a town located in the Ohio Valley on the Ohio River.
An eighteen-year-old high school football player, Sam Winters, came upon her body around seven thirty in the morning on Saturday, June 3, 1944.

Standing stiffly at attention, I clenched my hands and set my eyes on the state seal mounted on the wall behind the bench so I was looking toward but not directly at the judge.
“Ms. Krease, I asked if you’re paying attention?” the judge said, raising his voice a third.
I lowered my gaze to his face.
Bushy eyebrows veed over his hawkish nose. I tried not to think about the two dozen other people in the courtroom, all silent and still.

These are the opening sentences of JINGO STREET, a romantic suspense, by Sharon Ervin.

Blurb: Max Marcowitz murdered his first man when he was eight years old. Removed from their home, Max and his mentally disabled older brother Rosco failed in foster care and were sent to Delete, a state facility for wayward boys. By the time they were 12 and 15, Max and Rosco ran away. A natural con man, Max shined shoes, ran errands, posed for pornography, pimped, anything to support himself and Rosco.  Eventually, Max became a hit man.

Max is 36 years old, notorious, charming, and semiretired when he meets Anne Krease, 24, a naive lawyer. who grew up sheltered like a hothouse flower. JINGO STREET is Max’s story told from Anne’s viewpoint. Badly mismatched, the chemistry between Max and Anne sizzles. JINGO STREET is not a happily-ever-after romance, but rather women's fiction about crime vs. justice.

Because of the number of punctures, it took us hours to catalogue the ones on the front of the body. Five hundred and sixteen cuts, with lengths between half an inch and two inches. Many were superficial, barely slicing the skin, but some were as deep as three inches.
I couldn’t be sure, of course, but it appeared the killer had been controlled and methodical. None of the wounds seemed to have been inflicted without total deliberateness; this guy had purposely made each and every gash.
